Since PV is often a replacement
for kerosene lamps or even of smoky fires, it has great benefits for peoples health
through improved air quality. In the context of global climate change PV has the potential
if scaled up of reducing CO2 emissions significantly. In round numbers a typical
50W PV Solar Home System offsets the emissions of about 400 kg of CO2 on a yearly basis. The
GEF has financed several PV programs under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

ISES - The
International Solar Energy Society The International Solar Energy Society (ISES)
represents an international network of scientists, businesspeople and decisionmakers in
more than 118 countries around the world. These form a Global Alliance aimed at the
advancement of renewable energy through research, technology transfer, commercialisation
and education.
The
American Solar Energy Society
The American Solar Energy Society (ASES) is the United States Section of the International
Solar Energy Society.
ASES Factbase
This factbase is designed as an introduction to solar energy technologies, as well as a
resource leading to more information. Here you will find up-to-date information on the
state of four different solar energy technologies; photovoltaics, wind, solar thermal and
buildings. For each of the technologies, the fact file includes its history, a description
of the technology and definition of technical terms; a market assessment; periodic data
and trends; and business briefs and projects. There is also an analysis of the economic
impact of solar energy in general and of each technology. In addition there are sections
on the externalities and environmental factors affecting the deployment of solar energy
technologies; and government and regulatory impacts on solar energy.
This factbase is designed for all knowledge levels. One can learn the basics and keep up
on the leading edge. The facts are arranged in a clear outline form for easy access to
whatever you're looking for. To start, pick one of the broad topic areas. Within the area
there are sections on each of the four technologies. You can either stay within the topic
area, or you can follow links to read everything about a particular technology.
Very good information about solar energy in general is contained in the General Topics
Category. These categories are good places to find information about the economics of
solar energy and policy decisions that are affecting the research and development of
technologies.
